Analysis of Sediment Production from Two Small Semiarid Basins in Wyoming

چکیده

Data were collected at two small, semiarid basins in Wyoming to determine the relation between rainfall, runoff, and sediment production. The basins were Dugout Creek tributary and Saint Marys Ditch tributary. Sufficient rainfall and runoff data were collected at Dugout Creek tributary to determine the source of sediment and the dominant sediment-production processes. Because runoff from only one storm occurred in Saint Marys Ditch tributary, emphasis of the study was placed on the analysis of data collected at Dugout Creek tributary. At Dugout Creek tributary, detailed measurements were made to establish the source of sediment. To determine the quantity of material removed from headcuts during the study, two headcuts were surveyed. Aerial photographs were used to define movement of all headcuts. The total quantity of sediment removed from all headcuts between September 26, 1982, and September 26, 1983, was estimated to be 1,220 tons, or 15 to 25 percent of the estimated total sediment load passing the streamflow-gaging station. A soil plot was used to sample upland erosion. A rainfall and runoff modeling system was used to evaluate the interaction between the physical processes which control sediment production. The greatest change in computed sediment load was caused by changing the parameter values for the sediment-transport equations. Changes in parameter values for equations used to compute the detachment of sediment particles by rainfall and overland flow resulted in very small changes in computed sediment load. The upland areas were the primary source of sediment. A relationship was developed between the peak of storm runoff and the total sediment load for that storm runoff. The sediment concentration used to compute the total sediment load for the storm runoff was determined from sediment samples collected by two automatic pumping samplers. The coefficient of variation of the relationship is 34 percent with a 0.99 correlation coefficient.

Evaluation the Efficiency of MUSLE Model in Sediment Load Estimation Resulting from Individual Rain Events in Doviraj River Sub-Basins, Ilam Province

Most of our country is located in arid and semiarid climate which have high soil erosion and sediment production, therefore, the study of soil erosion and sediment yield and also evaluation of the effective factors on sediment production are very important in proper management of a watershed. The aim of present study is the efficiency evaluation of MUSLE model in sediment estimation in the stor...

A New Hydrological Method for Estimating the River Bed and Drainage Basin Components of Erosion and Suspended Sediment Fluxes in River Basins

This paper uses the results of river suspended sediment flux (SSF) analysis to propose a new hydrological method for quantitatively estimating the river bed and drainage basin (sheet erosion, rill and gully erosion) components of total erosion intensity in river basins. The suggested method is based on the establishment of the functional power connection between mean monthly water discharges (W...

Geomorphic Controls on Andean Denudation Rates

To predict erosion rates throughout the Andes, we conducted a multiple regression analysis of the sediment discharge from 47 drainage basins in the Bolivian Andes and various topographic, climatologic, and geologic parameters. These mountainous basins are typically large (17–81,000 km; km), often have decades of measurement mean p 11,000 data on daily water and sediment discharge, and display a...

Sedimentation efficiency of small dams in channels (Case study: Kermanshah province)

Small sediment dams are the key structures for controlling sediment flow and improving the course of waterways in watersheds. In Kermanshah province, the efficiency of these structures in sediment accumulation has been less studied and evaluated. This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of these structures in sediment retention and flood control in three watersheds of the province. For th...
